Landman’s Override (aka “Tycoon”) is a 4YO gelding standing 16.3+ hands and definitely still growing. I have no doubt he will mature to over 17 hands.
He was bred and owned by Black Rock Farm, who also raced and stood his sire, Far From Over (by Blame). He was started under saddle as a 2YO and into his 3YO year and posted a few workouts at the track, but due to a combination of his size and his owners downsizing their Thoroughbred interests, he never made a start and was turned out for the past year. He is RRP Thoroughbred Makeover-eligible based on his three published works.
It's obvious this horse has enjoyed getting back into work and loves having something to do. He greets you at the gate and is just a happy, good natured type of horse.
I've had Tycoon in training for about 60 days now. In his first few rides he was easy and straightforward, doing walk, trot and canter work over poles and a few cross rails and picking up both leads easily. On his third off-track ride, I hauled him to a farm with an indoor, and he schooled in both that and the outdoor jump arena nicely. For his fourth ride, I opted to take him on a hunter pace. While the event had a LOT more attendees and atmosphere than I anticipated (but yay for them!), once we got out on the trails, he was rock solid, traversing water crossings, logs, open fields, dense brush, steep inclines/descents and more. He was happy to lead the pack or follow behind, never got rushy and stood patiently for a little drink and photo-op stop. Then, he was happy to stand tied to the trailer munching on hay with his new friends for more than an hour after the ride.
Since then he has been working on getting a solid foundation of flatwork and simple lateral work, with a crossrail here and there just to keep things interesting, and he has hauled off-site for schooling in various indoor and outdoor arenas and trail ridden/hacked out. With him being so green (he's less experienced than most 4YOs due to the circumstances mentioned above) and so big (and in the midst of a significant growth spurt), I have been focusing on flatwork to develop his balance, cadance, suppleness and adjustability.
In the coming weeks he will have more off-site outings and do a bit more work with small jumps, natural obstacles and other new experiences.
Due to his size, I think he needs to keep the jumps low until he grows into himself, but once he does, the sky is the limit!
He is more of a hunter-type push ride (though that may change as he gets back into work mode and gains some fitness) and is light in the bridle, taking a light hold at the canter as he settles into a rhythm and doesn’t mind someone fully sitting the canter.
We will update his profile as he gains more experience!
